Moving beyond physics, CrossFit has also become a “social phenomenon” with a tightly knit community. A CrossFit gym is unlike any other gym.” – Defining CrossFit, Greg Glassman
When people initially think of CrossFit, they tend to think one of two ways:
It’s a crazy, cult-like group of people who lift weights, shirtless and a little too emphatically, and don’t know how to do pull-ups correctly. OR…
It’s an amazing group of people who are committed to their health and fitness and have rock-hard bodies.
There is a little bit of truth to both ideas. Cult-like, no. Amazing community, yes. Will weights be lifted and thrown back down? Yes. Will shirts be taken off mid-workout? Maybe. Are kipping pull-ups a strange sight without knowing the reasoning and technique behind them? Absolutely.
True or false as most people’s preconceived ideas of CrossFit are, this article is meant to highlight the benefits of CrossFit and how it will positively change your life!
While CrossFit’s tagline is “forging elite fitness” it could easily be interchangeable with “forging life changing friendships.” There is something special about grinding through a tough workout along-side the same people day in and day out. For most who participate in a CrossFit program, they are working out at least 4-5 times a week for an hour or more. The average person maintains a schedule which allows them to workout at the same time every day. So in any given month, a CrossFit member is spending 20+ hours with the same individuals. Friendships develop and are centered around a healthy and positive lifestyle. These friends will understand your nutrition and dieting preferences and your commitment to your health and fitness because they share the same desires for themselves!
Through the development of these friendships, CrossFit members build a sense of camaraderie. For some, showing up at 5:30am, before kids are awake, before the sometimes chaotic work day begins is the only time they can get their workout done… and they actually look forward to and are grateful to spend that hour in the mornings. To be able to start your day feeling great inside and out is a gift. Whether working out at 5:30am, at noon during a lunch break, or in the evening after work, it is a solid hour spent with friends who are excited to see you and miss you when you’re absent. Friends who push you to keep fighting for that extra rep, encourage you to keep running when you want to walk, and praise you for your victories!
At a globo gym, the workout is selfish. Headphones on, tuning out the surrounding noise and trying to ignore the surrounding strangers. Oblivious to the goals the person next to you is reaching for, you don’t celebrate in their victories. You don’t notice that they are lifting heavier than last week or even that there is a change in their body weight, because you try your best to zone out, get your workout done as quickly yet as effectively as possible and get out of there.
Upon joining the CrossFit community, you will notice an immediate difference. The members want to know you. You will be greeted upon arrival by name, not just by the coaches but by the members. Your coach will be very aware of your goals and help push you to smash those goals and create new ones. The other members will rally around you, encouraging you to push through your reps and celebrating each victory!
There is a selflessness about CrossFit. As you continue in the program, you will find yourself as excited about your new gym buddy’s progress and successes as you are of your own. The improvement you see in your piers won’t make you bitter or jealous, but it will motivate you to continue in your own journey and to reach your own goals!
Many people join CrossFit to lose weight, but in time will find that the change in their bodies takes a backseat to their desire to gain strength. The confidence gained by lifting weight equal to or greater than your own body weight is something that will always put a smile on your face. The empowerment felt by realizing that the workout that you weren’t able to complete a few months ago, was not only completed but also done with heavier weight is not something that can be bought in a pill.
CrossFit will change not only your body, but also your mind. With empowerment, constant encouragement and positivity a daily experience, your life will transform. Your mind will be renewed and your old self will be a distant memory. These changes won’t quickly fade and neither will your results. You will be proud of your strength and proud of the body that is capable and able to do the work and tackle each challenge put before you.
