On April 25, 2014, a senseless act of violence took the life of the father of my children and left me to raise my three babies alone. Being a single parent has been the toughest thing I’ve ever had to do. Raising three kids, working full time, and attending college didn’t leave much time to focus on myself. Parenting alone for almost two years started to wear me down. I became extremely exhausted and frustrated more than I had ever been in my life, while distancing myself from family and the few friends I had. I noticed I had become increasingly depressed and that was something I wasn’t okay with. I decided something needed to change, but I had no idea what to do. During one of my many sleepless nights, I came across a video on Facebook for Basin CrossFit that caught my attention. I had never stepped into a gym and my only exercise consisted of running after my kids. Why this video intrigued me was beyond me. I checked out the Basin CrossFit website and immediately became excited at the thought of possibly doing something for me. After a few emails back and forth to Coach Jarrett, I decided to stop in to watch a workout. After watching the 5:30 class do their thing, I was certain that I’d never be able to do any of the things they had done, but Jarrett assured me that, in time, I would. Despite my skepticism, I paid the member fee and came in the very next day to give it a shot.

Fast forward seven months… I’m a single mother of three amazingly wonderful children, with a full time job who takes 3-4 hours a week out of my busy life to do something for me. There have been many days the WOD has taken everything I have in me but I keep going back because I can honestly say CrossFit has changed me for the better—the results? Well, they speak for themselves. The strength, confidence and energy I’ve gained over the last seven months is far beyond anything I had ever imagined. The best feeling is having others tell me how great I look. And even though my 11-year old daughter thinks my muscles are gross, I’m pretty stoked that I have them.

My favorite things about Basin CrossFit are its members and their positive attitudes. Everyone’s willingness to help, whether it’s with technique, pushing you to get your next PR, or cheering you on to finish the WOD when you have nothing else to give is incredible. Being surrounded by people who are fun, motivated, and have a sense of humor make stepping into the gym stress-free and that’s something I look forward to each day.

I walked through the door of Basin CrossFit looking for a little time to myself to clear my head when I felt overwhelmed. As parents, we do whatever it takes to care for our children and often neglect ourselves in the process. No matter how busy you are, or whatever is going on in your life, always make yourself a priority. In the end, you’ll thank yourself—I know I have. My only goal is to be the best mother I can be, and to never allow myself to revert to where I was when I started this journey seven months ago.
